limp wrists

so my re-entry into the match world was continued tonight with another date. before even meeting up, the date is wrought with confusion. when he calls me, he proposes going to a "bland" place for drinks. in fact, he uses this word twice to describe our upcoming date location, to which i respond, "boy, you're really selling me on it." he laughs but offers no explanation for the bland comment. and i plan to corner him on this...

so we meet up at his "bland" bar choice, which is actually not bland at all. in fact, it's a bit london-ish, with all the dark lighting and fancy decor. conversation starts pretty easily, and the drinks are good. but there is something wrong with this picture. what is it? can't quite place it... oh yes, why are his hands doing that? he points and gestulates when talking with, well, kinda limp wrists. he's not completely effeminate, but maybe a little. the conversation is nonetheless entertaining. good sense of humour and pretty intelligent. he's a former (and i stress the word former) 7th day adventist, so we have some funny conversations about religious fundamentalism. strangely his parents have converted to jews for jesus...how exactly does one make that jump? he keeps calling me the whore of babylon all night - don't worry, it's funny. anyway, the evening is enjoyable and he picks up the tab. i try to avert my eyes when walking out and noticing the limp wrists again.

so is this a red flag, or does he have a bone problem that causes weak wrists? i don't know, and i'm too tired to contemplate it any more tonight. limp wrists is busy until next week, so keep your eyes open for an update. let's hope it's not another email rejection - i'm supposed to be giving those, not receiving!

oh, and the "bland" comment...apparently he thought i was some corporate professional type person, and he thought that i would prefer a personality-less place a bit more on the upscale version. funny...me the corporate professional type...

the earth

yes, readers, it's finally here - a new date! i met up with the latest for drinks, dinner, a walk around town and coffee this evening. he seemed like quite an interesting prospect before the date, but i didn't want to get my hopes up too high. i mean, we've seen the portland guys so far, right? this new guy seems quite clever, a bit of a smartass, likes sarcastic women, well traveled, intelligent, lots of great things! he did make the mistake of telling me his last name, so i was able to myspace-stalk him. should it have been a red flag that his page background was mary-kate and ashley oleson?? maybe. but i thought i'd give him the benefit of the doubt and hope it was just a joke.

so we meet at a bar in my neighbourhood for vodka drinks and some food. for my london friends, he is a cuter version of rob johnson. and how does he get his name? i'm pretty sure that he thinks the world revolves around him, just as our ancestors thought the earth was the center of the universe. the boy can talk! i swear, this is my easiest date ever because i hardly have to talk at all. he kind of has ADD, so every topic i raise he has some tangent he would like to share. flashbacks of the interruptor, anyone? except this time i only make it about 3 sentences into each topic before he jumps in for a 20 minute tangent. he knows a lot about a lot of things, he's had some interesting experiences in his life, and he has a lot of great stories, so i let him go ahead. we walk around the city and talk for quite awhile (well, the earth does most of the talking). we swap match stories and laugh at the freaks out there. he tells me many times what a "catch" he believes he is, and i'm really not sure he is joking about his own vanity. he seems like an interesting guy, if not just a bit overwhelming. i feel boring compared to this guy! but he does cute arm around the shoulder things and gives cute kisses good night, so maybe i'll give it a chance.

UPDATE - email rejection at its finest! the earth just sent me the "i'm not feeling the chemistry but you're a really cool girl" email. whatever. i mean, what's the point in keeping me out for hours and giving me a fucking goodnight kiss? it's not like he didn't know at that stage in the evening. jeez, is there any guy out there who is not a waste of time?

air guitar

this entry goes out to my friend julie. she had such a great first date a few years back, it deserves a special mention.

picture the indiana state fair. corn dogs, air-brushed tee shirts, couples with their hands in each others' jean pockets, tilt-a-whirl, the whole shebang. julie is excited to be going to said state fair for her first date, and he has tickets to the goo-goo dolls concert. (ok, it was several years ago, so this was exciting at the time.) the concert starts...and julie's date starts a mad air guitar riff. and continues it for the entire show...

special.
